How did I discover Bethel Evangelical Gospel Assembly?
Well, it's an interesting story.
As I approached Smooth Rock Falls, I spotted a steeple and made a beeline for it. That steeple turned out to be the Smooth Rock Falls Museum.
Then , I spotted a second steeple.
This was the Catholic Church, and although the sign said services were starting in 15 minutes, there wasn't a single vehicle in the parking lot.
Giving up, I was headed to the gas station to ask directions. Then, I spotted a cemetery on Main Street. Since there are often churches beside cemeteries, I headed north on Main Street.
Yes, there was a church, and it had a ramp to the entrance - even better for my crazy hip that gives out unexpectedly.
The parking lot was overflowing with vehicles. Yes, I would be late going in, but I had driven all the way there, so I screwed up my courage and went in.
The bulletin board showed evidence of a very active church family - announcements of an upcoming Family Snowshoeing Day, youth activities and an interdenominational women's day were posted.
There was a definite welcoming feel to the building.
Walking towards the sanctuary, I noticed a pastoral office with a comfortable upholstered floral chair in the hall. An open coat area, to the left, was brimming with winter coats and snow boots. I added mine to the collection and proceeded to the large double doors. To my right, I noticed a washroom door and nursery area.
Upbeat Christian music was emanating from the sanctuary. Peeking through the doors I noticed chairs arranged in angled auditorium style facing a young woman standing on the floor in front of a stage. Words were displayed on an overhead and recorded music was playing.
People wearing cheerful cold weather clothing were standing singing along to the music. One man was standing with arms raised in praise. There was no feeling of pretension here, just people getting together to joyfully worship.
I slipped into a chair near the back, and a woman smiled in greeting, held out her hand in welcome and passed me a church bulletin. I was pleasantly surprised to find it offered a space for notes.
It turned out, the gentleman who had his arms raised in praise, was from the head of the denomination. His sermon was on importance of being an active participant in services and explained the meaning of the word AMEN. At points in his sermon, he spoke in the spirit. At the end of the service, there was an altar call and I went up for prayers for myself and my daughter who was in hospital.
I felt a warm welcome from everyone in the church.
Since that first service, I have enjoyed worshipping at Bethel Gospel Assembly several times. While many people in the congregation do speak French, services are held in English.
Here is one sermon discovered on YouTube by Pastor Tim Ellis.
Tim and his family enjoy the great outdoors of northern Ontario. You may even meet him with his family out fishing on the rivers in the area.

Discovering Smooth Rock Falls Bethel Gospel Assembly
When we first moved to Fauquier, Ontario, I set out to attend the mass at the village Catholic Church, unfortunately, I could not find my keys anywhere, and was much too late for the service. Since I needed to pick up a stove in Smooth Rock Falls, I decided to drive the 20 minutes south to Smooth Rock Falls and see if there might be a church service there. As I approached Smooth Rock Falls, I spotted a steeple and made a beeline for it. Pastor Tim Ellis - Down to Earth Angler of Fish and People
Pastor Tim Ellis is a gifted speaker and down-to-earth follower of Christ who trained at the Bible College in Peterborough Ontario. It is not unusual to find him dressed in a plaid lumberjack shirt and comfortable clothes. Pastor Tim often includes congregation members in the sermon as examples of how they are putting points into practice in their daily lives. Many members of the congregation are encouraged to take part in the services -leading praise and worship, prayer, sharing announcements, and updates about mission projects and community outreach. The encouragement of input and participation makes this a vibrant Christian community. Here is one sermon discovered on YouTube by Pastor Tim Ellis.
